Two dogs are seen
guarding a bicycle in Nanjing, capital of southern China's Guangxi Province.
According to owner Luo Ganren, the pair are protective of him and his
possessions. My bike has no lock, and I never worry it would be stolen, thanks
to my two puppies. They will guard the bike by holding the bars until they see
me back.

Benefits of Waking Up Early
Early to bed and early to rise makes you healthy, wealthy as well as wise. And that is not merely an age-old saying. It works in daily life too. Read on to know how.
1. Time to Exercise
Waking up early gives you the time to exercise. You can easily go for a jog, do a few laps in the pool, practice yoga or hit the gym with plenty of time at hand.
2. Time to Meditate
There is nothing like beginning the day with a dose of meditation. It will help calm your mind and sharpen your reflexes to keep you going through your busy schedule of work.
3. Experience the Charm of Early Morning
Only an early morning person knows the charm and serenity that those hours offer. The silence, the birds chirping, the absence of cars honking, and the sunrise are all advantages only early rising can offer.
4. Increase Productivity and Efficiency
A study conducted at the Texas University in 2008 revealed that early risers are more prone to be productive and efficient at work. In fact, students who wake up early are known to get higher grades than those who wake up late.
5. Eating Breakfast
Breakfast is known to be the most important meal of the day. Often, you may land up skipping it if you are running late for work. An early start to the day ensures that this significant meal is never given the slip.
6. Less Stress
Giving you ample time to get ready on time, waking up early ensures that you suffer less stress. Beat the traffic and drive to work at ease.
7. Set Routine
Once you get into the habit of rising early, you are able to set a routine and that obviously leads to better productivity not only at work, but also on the home front and as an individual.
8. Brighter Mood
Early risers are known to be happier and more optimistic than night owls. The latter are known to suffer depression, insomnia and pessimism. The bright start with exercise and optimism is bound to keep you feeling energised and optimistic all day.
9. Better Health
Proper routine and exercise are known factors in ensuring better health in the long run. Waking up early ensures you set aside time to work out. Late risers lack the advantage of time for this.
10. Better Finances
Improved health, enhanced productivity and ameliorated energy can only result in one thing – a higher rate of success. And when this happens in your career, can financial triumph be far behind? So, rise early to kickstart a really great way of doing well in the professional sphere as well.
The benefits of waking up early are myriad. It doesn’t take much to change your lifestyle to avail these benefits. After all, personal and professional well-being, and ultimate success are what everyone seeks. So, why not adopt a healthier way of living and reap those benefits?

Some instruments are more tax efficient
Starting December,
mutual fund houses and insurance companies will begin to aggressively promote
tax saving instruments. And as usual, taxpayers who have not completed the
process of investing in tax-saving instruments will end up buying some of them
out of desperation. But they need to remember a few things about taxation.
Since, for many, the
investment and tax advisor are two different people, there isn't a proper plan
in place. The tax payer collates information on all the income and investment
transactions during a year, pays the relevant taxes on the same and files the
return. However, investing is a year-round activity. More often than not,
investors look out for tax-efficiency in every investment they do, whether it
is in the form of tax deductions, tax-free income or tax-free maturity. Thus,
investors keep evaluating and executing different investment options
round-the-year and file returns only once in July / September. Also, very
rarely, does it happen that an individual’s investment advisor/planner and tax
professional are the same. Typically, a tax payer dumps his/her income and
investment data with the tax professional, who in turn, files the returns.
In this process, many a
times, investors lose out on claiming the different tax-advantages available
with the investments in their returns. It is mainly because of lack of
knowledge about the tax treatment of specific investment products by the tax
professional or simply through oversight. Some common instances that a tax
payer should keep in mind to optimise the available tax advantages are as
follows:
Fixed
Maturity Plans (FMPs)
FMPs score over bank fixed deposits mainly on account of their differential tax treatment. As per the income tax provisions, the gains made on a FMP, which matures after 12 months, is liable to tax as long-term capital gains. Further, the cost of investment can be indexed as per the cost inflation index applicable for the year. The resulting capital gains are then taxed at 20 per cent. The tax outgo on these indexed gains provides good tax-efficient gains for the investor.
In many cases, this
favourable indexation benefit is ignored at the time of tax filings, thus,
depriving the investor of tax-savings. This saving is more pronounced for FMP
investments made in the month of March and maturing in April next year as it
gives a double indexation benefit.
Debt
mutual funds
Similar to FMPs, debt mutual funds are also subject to taxation in a manner that is different from equity mutual funds. Short term capital gains are taxed at the applicable slab rates and long term capital gains are taxed at 20 per cent after cost indexation. Not to omit that the long term gains on debt funds can be taxed at 10 per cent without cost indexation too. Most debt funds’ returns range between 8 and 9 per cent and as per the last declared cost inflation index for 2012-13 (852), the cost indexation between financial years 2001-12 and 2012-13 stands at 8.5 per cent. It may be noted that the indexation can, thus, help investors earn tax-free returns from debt funds for periods ranging beyond 1 year.

Private
management funds
A lot of private institutions that offer investment opportunities to investors in the form of real estate funds or private equity funds are often guised as trusts. These trusts are responsible for managing the funds as per the objectives and distribution of the surpluses to investors.
A lot of private institutions that offer investment opportunities to investors in the form of real estate funds or private equity funds are often guised as trusts. These trusts are responsible for managing the funds as per the objectives and distribution of the surpluses to investors.
Under the income tax
provisions, trusts are further classified as discretionary trusts. A
discretionary trust is a trust in which the individual shares in income or
corpus of the beneficiaries are indeterminate or unknown. As a general rule,
such trusts are taxed at the maximum marginal rate. The law further provides
that where a trust is taxed at maximum marginal rates or at a higher rate,
share of income from the trust is not to be included in the hands of the
beneficiary for computing tax liability.
In other words, any
dividend or any other form of income distributed by a discretionary trust to
investors is tax-free in the hands of investors. In case this benefit is ignored,
the investor will be paying double tax on the same income.
Bonus
and dividend stripping
Many investors look to make a quick fortune in the markets by buying shares of companies or units of a mutual fund just before the due dates of a large dividend payout. Their idea is to sell these shares immediately after the share/ unit price gets adjusted for dividend and incur a capital loss.
Many investors look to make a quick fortune in the markets by buying shares of companies or units of a mutual fund just before the due dates of a large dividend payout. Their idea is to sell these shares immediately after the share/ unit price gets adjusted for dividend and incur a capital loss.
The income tax act has
separate provisions to avoid this undue benefit; wherein it is provided that if
any shares are bought within a period of three months prior to the record date
and sold within three months (in case of shares) or nine months (in case of
mutual fund units), then the losses are not allowed to be claimed to the extent
of dividend earned.
A similar provision exists
for losses arising out of buying and selling mutual fund unit to take advantage
of a bonus issue by a mutual fund. In such cases, the loss accounted for is
then deemed to be the cost for the bonus units.
Tax payers must ensure
that the advantages (of tax saving), which they evaluated while selecting an
investment product, are actually utilised at the time of filing of returns.
The instances mentioned
above are only illustrative. It is advisable to have the investment advisor run
through the income tax computation to ensure that no tax benefits are unutilized

Eat More Fruit and Vegetables
Venu Haridas via yahoogroups.com
Note: One serve of fruit is 150 grams (equal to 1
medium-sized apple; 2 smaller pieces (e.g. apricots); 1 cup of canned or
chopped fruit; ½ cup (125ml) 99% unsweetened fruit juice; or 1½
tablespoons dried fruit).
One serve of vegetables is 75 grams (equal to ½ cup cooked vegetables; 1 medium potato; 1 cup of salad vegetables; or ½ cup cooked legumes (dried beans, peas or lentils).
One small glass of juice provides a child’s recommended daily amount of vitamin C. Unfortunately, many children regularly drink large amounts of juice and this can contribute to them putting on excess weight.
Children may need to try new fruits and vegies up to 10 times before they accept them. So stay patient and keep offering them. It can also help to prepare and serve them in different and creative ways.
Did you know?
- In NSW, close to 60% of children do not eat the recommended daily amount of vegetables.
- Research shows that watching a lot of TV is associated with children and teenagers drinking more soft drink and not eating enough fruit and vegetables.
- Fruit and vegetables are a great source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre.
- Eating fruit and vegetables every day helps children and teenagers grow and develop, boosts their vitality and can reduce the risk of many chronic diseases - such as heart disease, high blood pressure, some forms of cancer and being overweight or obese.
How many serves do kids and teens need?
All of us need to eat a variety of different coloured fruit and vegies every day – both raw and cooked. The recommended daily amount for kids and teens depends on their age, appetite and activity levels – see table below for recommended serves per day.Recommended daily serves of fruit and vegetables by age
Age | Fruit | Vegetables |
4-7 | 1-2 | 2-4 |
8-11 | 1-2 | 3-5 |
12-18 | 3-4 | 4-9 |
One serve of vegetables is 75 grams (equal to ½ cup cooked vegetables; 1 medium potato; 1 cup of salad vegetables; or ½ cup cooked legumes (dried beans, peas or lentils).
Fresh fruit is a better choice than juice
While whole fruit contains some natural sugars that make it taste sweet, it also has lots of vitamins, minerals and fibre, which makes it more filling and nutritious than a glass of fruit juice. One small glass of juice provides a child’s recommended daily amount of vitamin C. Unfortunately, many children regularly drink large amounts of juice and this can contribute to them putting on excess weight.
How to help kids and teens eat more fruit and vegies
Eating more fruit and vegies every day can sometimes be a struggle. However, research shows that we’re more likely to do so if they’re available and ready to eat.Children may need to try new fruits and vegies up to 10 times before they accept them. So stay patient and keep offering them. It can also help to prepare and serve them in different and creative ways.
Some ideas to try:
- Involve the whole family in choosing and preparing fruit and vegies.
- Select fruit and vegies that are in season – they taste better and are usually cheaper.
- Keep a bowl of fresh fruit in the home.
- Be creative in how you prepare and serve fruit and vegetables - such as raw, sliced, grated, microwaved, mashed or baked; serve different coloured fruit and vegies or use different serving plates or bowls.
- Include fruit and vegies in every meal. For example, add chopped, grated or pureed vegetables to pasta sauces, meat burgers, frittatas, stir-fries and soups, and add fruit to breakfast cereal.
- Snack on fruit and vegies. Try corn on the cob; jacket potato topped with reduced fat cheese; plain popcorn (unbuttered and without sugar or salt coating); chopped vegies with salsa, hummus or yoghurt dips; stewed fruit; fruit crumble; frozen fruit; or muffins and cakes made with fruit or vegies.
- Try different fruits or vegies on your toast – banana, mushrooms or tomatoes.
- Add chopped or pureed fruit to plain yoghurts.
- Make a fruit smoothie with fresh, frozen or canned (in natural or unsweetened juice) fruit; blend it with reduced fat milk and yoghurt.
- Chop up some fruit or vegie sticks for the lunchbox.
- In summer, freeze fruit on a skewer (or mix with yoghurt before freezing) for a refreshing snack.
- Make fruit-based desserts (such as fruit crumble or baked, poached or stewed fruit) and serve with reduced fat custard.
- Have fresh fruit available at all times as a convenient snack – keep the fruit bowl full and have diced fruit in a container in the fridge.

Safety tips for Women (Must Read And Forward)
K.G. GOPALAKRISHNAN via yahoogroups.com
Here are some safety tips for sisters:
1. Always be aware of your surroundings
This applies whether you are traveling alone or in groups. Dont just focus inwardly on your thoughts if you are alone, or your friends if you are together. Keep one eye out for your environment, looking out for suspicious characters, possible danger, etc.
Also, dont assume that because your area has been "safe" thus far, that it will continue to be so.
2. Travel in groups
"There is safety in numbers" is not just a cliche. Its true. Make a point of traveling together with other sisters, whether its on public transportation, on campus, in cars, etc.
3. Change the route you normally travel by
If youve taken the same bus, train or highway to get to work or school, change your route. Even if it takes you a little longer, your safety is more important. By changing your route, you can avert possible attacks or harassment from those who know your schedule, method and route of travel well. Please note though that you should avoid short cuts that take you through unfamiliar or unsafe areas.
4. Look confident
Walk with a straight posture and your arms swinging by your sides. Avoid slouching or walking like a victim. This makes you an easy target for attackers.
5. When riding by public transportation choose the right seat
If you are riding by bus or train, do not sit on the window seat as you may be "blocked in" by a potential assailant. Always select the seat next to the aisle so that you can quickly leave if necessary.
If you are taking public transportation alone after peak hours, sit as close to the driver as possible and/or choose the section of the bus/train that is most crowded. Try to get a seat near the exit as well.
6. If you are driving alone
Dont think that if you are in a car, youre safe. Windows should be up and doors locked even when driving to avoid unwanted passengers at intersections. When you are walking to your car, always have your keys ready, so that you can quickly get into your car.
But dont just get in right away. Always check your car before entering, especially the back, for any intruders.
7. Never leave your car door unlocked
Even if it means for one minute to drop something off in the mailbox thats a few feet away. Attackers have been known to lie in wait for such an opportunity.
8. Be careful in parking lots
Always be alert in parking lots, especially when it's dark. Ask someone to escort you to your car. Between cars and inside cars, it's easy for someone to hide and wait until an unalert person comes along.
9. If you are traveling by taxi
Always check the identification of the driver (usually located near the visor) and ensure that it matches the driver. Once inside, don't sit behind the driver as it may be easy for the driver to lock the rear passenger door. Always choose the adjacent seat .
In addition, avoid flagging taxis. Always order taxis so the driver can be traced if something happens.
10. Dont use the walkman
If youre used to listening to your walkman while outside, drop this habit, especially in isolated areas. With your walkman on, you cannot hear the approach of a possible attacker.
11. Note "safe houses" along your route
Mentally note houses at intervals on each route you take that can be used as "safe houses" if you are attacked, such as shops or houses that you know to be occupied by a friend or acquaintance.
12. When you make a call from a phone booth
After dialing the number you wish to call always turn around so that you have your back to the phone and may see who or what is coming your way. You will then be able to tell the person to whom you are speaking that you may be in trouble and you may be able to use the weight of the phone as a weapon. The door of a telephone box could be used to wedge in the limbs of the attacker.
13. Do not open the door of your home without checking
DO NOT open the door to your home without first checking from a window, peephole or by asking and verifying who it is. Instruct children to do the same.
14. Report any suspicious activity around your home
If you see people loitering on the streets near your house, call the police on a non emergency number and report it.
15. Invest in a cell phone
This is an invaluable safety device. Keep it with you at all times and keep emergency numbers on it. Also, keep it next to your bed before you go to bed at night. Cell phones were first popularized by women as a security device, business people came later.
16. Parking tips
Avoid parking in areas that are not well lit. Where possible, park close to a school or work entrance or in a parking garage that has an attendant.
If you see a suspicious person approaching or hanging around near your parked car, turn around and go back to an area where there are other people. Try to get an escort to your car through the campus or job security or local police.
17. Tell others about your whereabouts
Parents, spouses and friends should know where you are going and when you will be back, so that your absence will be noticed. Arrange a call in system with a friend if you live alone, whereby you call when you arrive home.
18. Trust your instincts
If you are walking somewhere and feel strange or scared, dont ignore this feeling. Take extra precautions by walking a little faster to get to a more populated or well-lit area or change the route youve been driving on.
19. If you think you are being followed, change your route and activity.
You can cross the street, change directions, or enter a populated building or store. Do whatever is necessary to avoid being alone with the person who is following you. Inform a police officer or security official about the
follower.
20. Attract attention if you are in a dangerous situation.
Get others to pay attention to what's happening to you if you are under attack or being harassed. You can alert others by honking a car horn or loudly describing what is happening.
21. NEVER admit that you are alone
If someone calls your home and asks if you are alone, NEVER admit it. Ask who the caller is. If they refuse to identify themselves, calmly hangup. Keep the radio on in the house so that callers will get the impression that others are in the home too. Instruct children to do the same when they pick up the phone.
22. Obscene phone calls
If you receive an obscene call or a crank call, do not talk to the caller. Hang up if the caller doesnt say anything, or as soon as s/he shouts obscenities. Hang up the phone calmly and do not slam it down. Note down the date and time of the calls. If they are persistent, inform local police.
23. If you are a student
Avoid studying in isolated classrooms in parts of the college campus that are not regularly patrolled by the schools security officers.
24. In large buildings take the elevator, not the stairwell
Stairwells are usually quiet and dark. Most people take the elevator. But if someone creepy gets on, dont hesitate to get off at the same time. Or, if someone is already on the elevator who you feel strange about, do not get on and wait for the next elevator.
